The Read & Thrive Book Drive is a month-long fundraiser to get books into the hands of our youngest residents and help them become lifelong readers.

The goal of the Read & Thrive Book Drive is to help create a community where every child, regardless of family income, is growing up in a home with plenty of books.

Having books at home helps children become ready to learn, combat summer learning loss once they are in school, and identify as readers. Sixty-one percent of low-income children have no children’s books at home.

Reading proficiency by third grade is the most important predictor of high school graduation and career success. More than 80 percent of children from low-income families are not proficient readers by the end of third grade.

The Read & Thrive Book Drive will run from November 3, 2019 to December 3, 2019.

Read & Thrive Book Drive – Frequently Asked Questions

Q:  What is the Read & Thrive Book Drive?
A:  The Read & Thrive Book Drive is Team Haverhill’s newest project that aims to get books into the homes of our city’s youngest readers.  It is a month-long community-driven fundraising effort from November 3 through December 3.

Q:  What is the difference between Bowling for Books and the Read & Thrive Book Drive?
A:  Bowling for Books was a fantastic and fun event to get the month started!  It was on November 2 at Academy Lanes.  Please  consider registering a team next year.

Q:  Where does the money go?
A:  It goes to BOOKS!  Team Haverhill is a 100% volunteer-based organization; we have no employees and no offices.  All donations will go directly to purchasing new books for Haverhill’s youngest learners, regardless of family income.

Q:  What books will the kids actually be getting?
A:  A selection of titles have been selected in conjunction with the Haverhill Public Library, and vary by age group.  We are working on ways to give the children as much power to choose their own books as possible, so the current list might change.  Feel free to email us for more info.

Q:  Can I donate used books?
A:  Unfortunately, not at this time.   Our goal is to give children the experience of owning and reading their own, new book.  Keep an eye on our Facebook page for some alternatives for used books.

Q:  Why new books?
A:  We are hoping to give our youngest learners a better chance of becoming lifelong readers by creating a sense of ownership from the special bond a child has with a brand new book.

Q:  Can I donate online?
A:  We’d be thrilled if you did… just click here!
